About Richard

I came across Tai Chi & Chi Kung completely by accident, like many teenage boys I wanted learn Kung Fu.

However this was the only classes going on near me and I carried it on, as it would give me a foundation when I found that Kung Fu Class. After a few months I began to notice differences in my health as a young child I suffered with poor health with Asthma and Eczema.

The differences were subtle at first better sleep, better focus I slowly started to improve at other sports and was sought to join after school clubs, I went from being last pick to 2nd or 3rd choice by fellow class mates for football games even my P. E teacher was beginning to notice the difference.

I became hooked on Tai Chi and Chi Kung and have been now since 1992.

About Start Tai Chi

I started Start TAI Chi in 2015 after my teacher Paul Tien left the area and began a class in my local town and then my surrounding towns, the classes have continued to grow and are full of like minded people who are warm, friendly and welcoming to new Tai Chi members, they enjoy the exercises too and are seeing the health improvements for themselves too.

I have taught School Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, many retired people and those from all backgrounds, many of whom who joined for lots of different reasons.

Across several classes we have a community of close to 100 members, it's not about numbers though for me, it's about that warm friendly welcoming environment and sharing the Tai Chi and Chi Kung Exercises that I have had so much pleasure from learning and practicing.

About our Style

I teach Traditional Yang Style Tai Chi that I dedicated myself too for over ten years learning from my teacher Paul Tien. Paul learned from his father Charles Tien in Hong Kong who ran classes and gatherings with his work colleagues after work on the rooftop of the Old Bank of China Building (pictured above). He like myself started learning as a young boy in Shanghai back in the 1920s.
